This talk will first provide an overview of the significance of Southeast Asian ceramics in the context of historical archaeology in Asia. I will explore how migration, religion, and trade have shaped ceramic manufacturing technologies and decorative techniques between mainland Southeast Asia and East Asia. To illustrate these connections, we will discuss two case studies. The first examines the possible technological transfer of ceramic production techniques, specifically roof tiles and covered boxes, between Angkor and China during the Angkorian period (C.E. 802-1431). We will investigate how archaeological ceramics can reframe our understanding of Angkor's role alongside Chinese port cities like Guangzhou and Quanzhou within Maritime Asia's interregional networks. Furthermore, we will consider how these ceramics reflect the kingship and vibrant social life in both Angkor and migrant societies from the 9th to the 14th centuries.

The second case study focuses on a newly investigated ethnoarchaeological research project on ceramic production in Chợ Lớn(Cholon), often referred to as "little Hong Kong," in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. In recent years, the production of Guangdong Foshan-style ceramic ridge tiles and sculptures by artisans of Vietnamese-Foshan descent has garnered renewed interest among Chinese scholars. This research highlights the technological transfer from Guangdong to South Vietnam and underscores the significance of Chợ Lớn as a major hub for the Guangdong migrant community in Southeast Asia since the late 18th century. It hopes to inspire future studies and shed light to the ongoing conceptualization of tradition and innovation within Southeast Asian ceramic studies in interregional cultural exchange.
