演講摘要：
This talk is an attempt to critique both the modern history of state secularization in China and also aspects of postcolonial theory.  The threats to China’s sovereign integrity in the 19th and 20th centuries led to the reaction-formation of the modern expansion and reconfiguration of an ancient sovereign power into a secular and state socialist biopower.  Local sacred sovereignties of tutelary deity cults that had integrated countless local communities together throughout the old Chinese imperial system had to be eradicated in order to promote modern centralized nationalism.  This decimation of local religious cults had the effect of reducing local autonomy from the state and the foreclosure of possibilities for the formation of indigenous religiously-inspired civil society in modern China.  In order to do justice to this history, postcolonial studies must shift from its current Eurocentric critique of the West, to examine native agency and complicity in “the colonization of consciousness.”

講者簡介：
Professor Mayfair Yang（楊美惠）教授為當今著名的華裔美國人類學家，於1986年獲美國加州大學伯克利分校人類學專業博士學位。現任美國加州大學聖塔芭芭拉分校宗教學系及東亞語言與文化系教授，並兼任東亞研究中心主任。她專長的研究與教學領域為：religion and critical theory; China Studies, sovereignty and state power; gender studies; media studies; cultural approaches to political economy等。

楊美惠教授長期從事於中國研究的理論化，1980年代即開始進行中國的民族誌研究與調查工作，並探討華人移民在臺灣、香港及東南亞等地的情形，致力於以西方批判理論反思華人世界的經驗現象。代表性著作《Gifts, Favors, and Banquets: the Art of Social Relationships in China》(中譯為《禮物，關係學與國家：中國人際關係與主體性建構》) 於1994年出版，此書曾獲得1995 年Victor Turner Prize in Ethnographic Writing的提名，並獲得1997年American Ethnological Society First Book Prize。此外，她在國際重要的學術期刊上出版了三十餘篇英文及法文論文，也包括數篇中文論著。在1987-2011期間，她發表了近150篇學術演講及會議論文，也製作了兩部記錄片：“Public and Private Realms in Rural Wenzhou, China” (1994) 及“Through Chinese Women’s Eyes” (1997)。她曾主編學術文集《Spaces of Their Own: Women's Public Sphere in Transnational China》（1999），探討當代中國女性面臨的問題。她主編的《Chinese Religiosities: Afflictions of Modernity and State Formation》（2008），探討宗教感、現代性與國家建構的關係，更集中地呈現她對中國民間社會的宗教觀察，顯示她對宗教課題的關注和近年來的思考。目前進行中的另一部專書名為：《Re-Enchanting Modernity: Sovereignty, Ritual Economy, and Indigenous Civil Order in Coastal China》。
