Why should I study at NTHU?

As the world quickly becomes multi-polar in economic, cultural and academic senses, there is an increasing need for scholars of Asia to become multi-polar in their training. For students training in anthropology with a focus in Asia, studying their degree in an Asian institution is increasingly becoming a viable, and in many ways, desirable strategy.


For much of academic history, there has been little dialogue between Asian and Western scholars but this time is coming to a close. The next generation of scholars of Asia will need to be linguistically and culturally able to engage in meaningful dialogue with Asian scholars.


The MA and PhD programs at the Institute of Anthropology at National Tsing Hua University offer academic training that can provide students with a variety of opportunities not available in institutions in the United States or Europe. These include exposure to Chinese language academic environments, increased access to field sites, funding for field research at both MA and PhD levels, and the opportunity to build connections with scholars in both academic institutions and in research field sites. This kind of training can greatly increase the quality of research future scholars of Asia are able to carry out and greatly raise the level of competition in their fields.
