Mobile Networked Sociality: Linguistic Anthropological Approach to the Study of China’s Minority Migrant Youth and Mobile Communication

講題介紹：

    Texted mobile communication includes the material aspect of technological skills and the informational and communicative aspect of networked sociality. In this talk I explain the networked sociality of young Wa migrant workers that is made possible through use of mobile phones and texted communications when they are on the move. Troubled by poor economic conditions in their rural homelands in southwest China, many Wa youth seek work in the urban manufacturing districts of southeast China. Most now rely on mobile phone—a desirable communicative commodity—to connect to the social media, QQ. Texted mobile communication promotes the material and digital sets of networked sociality which are integral to the continuity and development of interpersonal connectivity. What is made of mobile phone as a digital platform of selfhood and identity is closely connected to the reproduction and negotiation of social hierarchy and the domination of the Chinese language ideology in mobile texting and blogging. To unpack the complexity of social networking and social media in a linguistic anthropological framework of language ideology, I argue that networked sociality of Wa migrant workers shows both the constraints they face and the potentiality they develop for voicing social inequality and reconfiguring language ideology in urban work environments. Their networked sociality is online and yet rooted in their fragmented engagements with mobile devices and language use. It is hierarchically-ranked and linguistically-scaled.
