講題：Language, Voice, and Politics of Representation: Introduction to an anthropology of voice production

In creative industries, producers utilize a range of semiotic resources to construct conversations and animate characters in ways that evoke preconceived, well-recognized social personae. My work tackles one such industry—the dubbing industry—in Taiwan and examines its specialized practice locally referred to as _peiyin_ 'dubbing, voice-acting'. Grounded in the linguistic anthropological tradition, I take dubbing as a social process through which existing expressive modes are (in)validated in the politics of representation. In this talk, I will first survey some of theoretical approaches to dubbing in linguistic anthropology and sociolinguistics. I will continue by describing my ethnographic fieldwork carried out in Taipei, Taiwan, since 2016 with three generations of voice actors. By looking at behind-the-scenes between the dubbing professionals, I will delineate the bottom-up attempts from the voice actors in supporting, mitigating, and at times, challenging existing norms in regimenting language. I will conclude by proposing a refined anthropological approach to cultural products in general, and dubbing in specific, that carefully gives equal attention to both the linguistic microculture and the sociopolitical macroculture.
