講題大綱:
In this talk, I discuss the exploitation, consumption, and conceptualization of sharks along the Huanchaco littoral on the north coast of Peru from the second millennium BCE to the present era. Using shark remains as a lens, I explore how a natural resource is transformed over several millennia by the evolving needs and sociopolitical shifts of coastal societies. Based on the archaeological contexts in which shark remains have been recovered, I propose that sharks transitioned from a vital subsistence resource into an ideological concept. Initially used to legitimize the power and authority of local leaders, sharks later became a symbol of community identity during the advent of the region's first expansive states. Subsequently, sharks became linked to ancestral lineage and leadership, giving rise to myths and oral traditions that endure today among the native fishing community of Huanchaco.
