講題內容介紹:

This presentation is to be largely based upon my doctoral thesis and is also an extended version of the paper presented at the 2014 PHA Conference last December. It aims at giving a structured synthesis of the main aspects that have transpired as important during the one year of doctoral fieldwork that I conducted in Vanuatu in 2011-2012. This paper, following the main argument of the thesis, is mainly centred upon the description of the importance of the church in the emergence and growth of a place, that of the village of Tasiriki, South West Santo, Vanuatu. Thus, I wish to show that in Tasiriki, the church is as much a given as other elements which are constitutive of the place and that the church is very much grown like gardens and kinsmen. Yet, the church is also at the root of the place’s growth into a specific form. This asks the question whether the church could stand as the expression of place. It is the image of the rooted, yet continuously re-rooted (re-routed) and re-connected banyan that I wish to use as a synthesis of the coming into being of Tasiriki. The image of the banyan appears in the hymn recalling the arrival, the planting and growth of the Gospel on the shore of Tasiriki and for people, banyans are the traces left in the bush of former settlements. Thus the banyan tree is closely associated with the idea of place, vanua in vernacular, and could stand as both an image of the emergence of the vanua since the foundation of the mission ground and that of the vanua in its current becoming.
