講題:清朝竹塹地區菁英家族的婚姻策略(MARITAL STRATEGIES IN ELITE LINEAGES IN HSINCHU COUNTY IN THE QING DYNASTY)
講者:James Wilkerson 魏捷茲(清華大學人類學研究所副教授)
講題內容介紹:
In the Qing dynasty era, the Wu and Zheng lineages resided physically just outside but administratively within the North Gate district of Hsinchu City in the neighboring communities of Nanya administrative village and Shuitian market street. The genealogies of the Wu (SWZ, n.d.) and Zheng (Zheng Pengyun, comp. 1923; ZSZPBZWYH, ed.) of these two lineages provide not just the usual detail on their male lineage members and the organization of their agnatic relations and corporate properties. Entries in these genealogies also include rare detail on wives and their natal household membersthat makes it possible to calculate the frequencies and distributions of the natal households of many of the wives who entered the Wu or Zheng lineage through major marriages. It is likewise also possible to calculate which wives had immediate male family members who held degrees and even if those with degrees additionally included bureaucratic rank (see below). Finally, points of contact between the numeric and graphic details garnered from the genealogies and the descriptions available in county’s Qing dynasty era local histories and other similar conventional historical sources makes it possible to forensically locate the natal households and communities of both the wives and husbands within Hsinchu County’s markets and sub-bureaucracies. Understanding the resulting triangle of relationships between marriages, markets, sub-bureaucracies answers a key question in the literature on “second governments” as well as “ritual spheres” among Han Chinese. The question is whether relationships through women were ever a factor in “second governments” and “ritual spheres.” The short answer is that affinal relationships—that is, relationships through marriage—were another route through which the lineages and temple associations, the marketing system, the sub-bureaucratic system were interrelated. The hope is that this fresh benchmark will make it possible to better gauge how Qing dynasty era Hsinchu County emerged over its pioneering period and then the dramatic changes that took place between the end of Qing dynasty rule and present times.
